For years, visitors have joked that Dubai’s streets are paved with gold. Soon, one of them actually will be.
Dubai Gold District has announced plans to open what it describes as the world’s first and longest 24-carat gold walkway before the end of 2026. Rashid Al Harmoodi, Senior Director of Commercial at Dubai Gold District, said the walkway is expected to open within the next two months, giving residents and tourists the chance to stroll along a golden path through the district.
In other words, there is a decent chance your December visitors will want to go.
What we know so far
Honestly? Not a huge amount yet, and we would rather tell you that than guess.
- Where: Dubai Gold District in Deira, the gold and jewellery hub launched in January 2026 around the historic Gold Souk area.
- When: Expected within two months of the 24 October announcement, so before the end of 2026. No exact date yet.
- What it is: A pedestrian walkway featuring 24-carat gold, billed as the first and longest in the world.
- Still to be revealed: The length, how much gold is involved, how it is built and whether there is any entry charge or access rule.
The idea is not entirely new. When Dubai Gold District launched in January, a “Gold Street” made with real gold was announced as part of the redevelopment of the Gold Souk area. This is the first time we have had a timeline.
Why it is happening now
The walkway is part of a wider push to turn the district into a place you visit, not just a place you shop. The district says the number of wholesale gold trading offices opening there has grown by 20% since the start of 2026, with new jewellery, precious stone and luxury watch shops up by 15%. It already counts more than 1,000 retailers across gold, jewellery, perfume and cosmetics.
Go now for the record-breaking earrings
You do not have to wait for the walkway to get your gold fix. The announcement came at the unveiling of a pair of 22-carat gold jhumka earrings that has just earned Dubai two Guinness World Records titles, for the heaviest and the largest pair of gold earrings.
The Mayura Sahasra earrings weigh 16.514kg in total, more than five times the previous record, and draw on a peacock design. They were unveiled by Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism, on 24 October. They will not be sold, and they are on permanent public display at the Jewel of Joy by Joyalukkas showroom in Dubai Gold District.
Wow-Emirates Expert Tip: Make an evening of it. See the earrings, then wander the old Gold Souk lanes next door and finish with an abra ride across the Creek. Go on a weekday after sunset, when the souk is cooler and calmer, and haggling feels like sport rather than survival.
Our take
Will a gold walkway change your life? Probably not. Will it be the most photographed 15 minutes of your visitors’ trip? Almost certainly. Pair it with the souk, the Creek and a proper Deira dinner, and you have one of the best old Dubai evenings going.
We will update this page with the opening date, location details and visitor info as soon as they are confirmed.
