Etihad Rail Pets Rules: Can You Take Your Dog on the Train From Dubai?

Abu Dhabi to Dubai in 57 minutes: Etihad Rail reveals travel time for passenger trains

Etihad Rail lets dogs, falcons and other small pets travel in an approved cabin-sized carrier on every passenger route. Here’s what fits, how to get your pet to the station and what else has changed on the network.

Yes, your dog can ride Etihad Rail with you. The catch? The pet rules are built for a small dog in a cabin-sized carrier, not a Labrador on a lead – and the slick Metro bridge at the Dubai station is no use to you once there’s a pet involved.

Here’s exactly what the Etihad Rail pets policy allows, how to actually get your animal to Al Yalayis Station, and everything else that’s changed on the network since Dubai services launched on 30 September – from the new variable fares to extra weekend trains and the next stations opening.

Can you take pets on Etihad Rail?

Yes. Etihad Rail allows domestic pets, including dogs and falcons, on its passenger trains. Each pet must travel inside an approved carrier no bigger than 55cm x 40cm x 23cm, stay inside it for the whole journey and remain under your control. You can bring one carrier per passenger, and it replaces your cabin bag.

That applies on every route currently running – Dubai to Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi to Fujairah, Dubai to Fujairah and the Al Dhaid services in Sharjah. Pets were allowed from day one of passenger operations, so this isn’t a trial. It’s the standing policy.

Which pets actually fit?

Let’s be honest – the number that matters is the 23cm depth. That’s roughly the height of a shoebox on its side. A Chihuahua, a Pomeranian, a toy poodle or a smaller cat will travel comfortably in a soft-sided carrier at that size. A French bulldog is pushing it. Anything bigger simply isn’t going on the train, no matter how well behaved.

Cats aren’t named specifically in the published rules, but they fall under domestic pets and fit the carrier rule far more easily than most dogs. If you’re travelling with anything other than a dog, cat or falcon, call the Contact Centre before you book rather than finding out at the gate.

Falcons on the train

Falcons get a named mention, which makes sense in the UAE. There are no separate falcon rules published, so the same carrier and control rules apply – the bird travels in an approved carrier within the size limit, not hooded on your glove.

The part nobody mentions: getting your pet to the station

The headline feature of Dubai’s Etihad Rail station at Al Yalayis is the 400-metre footbridge to Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro Station. Great for commuters. Useless for you.

Pets aren’t allowed on the Dubai Metro, tram or RTA buses (certified assistance dogs aside), so the Metro-plus-train combo that everyone’s talking about is off the table the moment there’s a carrier in your hand. The same goes for the F38 feeder bus and the Nol One-Day Pass add-on. Your realistic options are:

  • Drive and park: 265 spaces at AED 30 (USD 8), including five EV bays. On weekends and around the early commuter trains, they go fast.
  • Get dropped off: there’s a dedicated pick-up and drop-off area, which is the low-stress option if someone can do the run.
  • Ride-hailing or taxi: pet acceptance varies by app and by driver, so confirm before you book rather than at the kerb.

And yes, think about the other end too. In Abu Dhabi, the station is at Mohamed Bin Zayed City, not downtown, and the AED 10 (USD 3) Etihad Rail shuttle is built around passengers with bags, not animals. Line up a lift or a car before you travel.

Wow-Emirates Expert Tip: Before you book, scroll through every departure on your date in the app. Afternoon, evening and weekend trains are priced higher, so a weekday morning service is usually the cheapest seat on the route. Pair it with a drop-off rather than driving, because the 265 parking spaces at Al Yalayis fill up fastest on exactly those morning commuter trains.

How to travel with a pet on Etihad Rail: before you go

  1. Measure your carrier against 55 x 40 x 23cm, including any rigid frame. Soft-sided carriers give you a little more room to work with.
  2. Pack light. The carrier is your carry-on, so you’re down to whatever personal item fits under your seat.
  3. Book online, not at the machine. A ticket that costs AED 39 (USD 11) in the app or on etihadrail.ae costs AED 60 (USD 16) at a station vending machine.
  4. Arrive early. Gates close two minutes before departure, and you’ll want time to settle your pet before boarding.
  5. Prep your pet like a short flight. Walk them before you leave, skip a big meal, and bring a pee pad and water for the far end. The Dubai to Abu Dhabi run is about 64 minutes and Abu Dhabi to Fujairah about 1 hour 45 minutes.
  6. Assistance dog? Call the Contact Centre to register the booking in advance.

If you’ve already done the paperwork for flying with your dog or cat from the UAE, this will feel very familiar – just without the vet certificates. And if your pet is still getting used to travel, a few practice trips in the carrier to one of the pet-friendly parks in Dubai makes train day a lot calmer.

What’s not allowed on Etihad Rail

Pets got the green light. A few other things very much didn’t:

  • Bicycles, scooters, e-scooters and e-bikes – even foldable ones.
  • Alcohol, sealed or not, plus vapes, e-cigarettes and electronic shisha.
  • Bulky items like large musical instruments, big sports equipment and plants that aren’t secured.
  • Anything with a strong smell – worth remembering if you’re carrying pet food or treats. Keep them sealed.

Pushchairs are fine (one free per child, folded before boarding), and wheelchair spaces must be reserved when you book. Each passenger gets two items of luggage free, with extra bags requested in advance through the app, website or Contact Centre.

Other Etihad Rail updates you should know about

Pets aren’t the only change. The first two weeks of Dubai services have already shifted how the network prices and schedules trains.

Fares now change with demand

Etihad Rail has confirmed variable pricing. The AED 39 headline fare still exists, but afternoon, evening and weekend trains now cost more, and prices rise as the cheaper seats sell. Fares depend on the service, the date and time, the class, the fare type (Saver, Value or Flex) and how early you book.

Extra weekend trains and early sell-outs

Demand has been strong enough that Etihad Rail added six extra Abu Dhabi – Dubai services over a recent weekend, releasing more than 2,000 additional tickets. Even so, many Dubai – Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi – Fujairah journeys are selling out in advance. If you’re travelling with a pet and need a specific train, book days ahead, not on the morning.

Four stations open, five more coming

Right now you can ride from four stations: Al Yalayis (Dubai), Mohamed Bin Zayed City (Abu Dhabi), Fujairah and Al Dhaid (Sharjah). Next up:

  • 30 November 2026: Madinat Zayed and Liwa in Al Dhafra – brought forward from the original schedule.
  • 30 December 2026: Al Mirfa, Al Dhannah and Al Sila in Al Dhafra.
  • 30 March 2027: University City in Sharjah, completing the first passenger network.

Liwa by train with the dog in a carrier and a desert weekend at the other end? That’s a very real plan from 30 November. Just check your accommodation is pet-friendly first – our pet-friendly Dubai guide is a good place to start for hotels that welcome dogs closer to home.

Wow-Emirates Expert Tip: Always pick at least a Value fare when your pet is coming. Saver tickets can’t be changed or refunded, and if your dog has a bad morning or the vet calls, you’ll want the option to move to a later train without losing your fare.

Etihad Rail pets – FAQs

Can I take my dog on Etihad Rail?

Yes, as long as your dog fits in an approved carrier no larger than 55cm x 40cm x 23cm and stays inside it for the whole trip. In practice that means small breeds only. The carrier counts as your cabin bag.

Are cats allowed on Etihad Rail?

Etihad Rail allows domestic pets in approved carriers, and cats fall under that category. Dogs and falcons are the only animals named specifically, so it’s worth a quick call to the Contact Centre if you want confirmation before travelling.

Do pets need a ticket on Etihad Rail?

No separate pet fare has been announced. Your pet travels in its carrier as part of your own luggage allowance, replacing your carry-on bag.

Can I take my pet on the Dubai Metro to the Etihad Rail station?

No. Pets aren’t allowed on the Dubai Metro, tram or RTA buses, apart from certified assistance dogs. To reach Al Yalayis Station with a pet, drive and use the AED 30 (USD 8) car park, get dropped off, or book a ride that accepts pets.

Are assistance dogs allowed on Etihad Rail?

Yes. Trained and certified assistance dogs can travel, but you need to arrange it in advance through the Etihad Rail Contact Centre rather than turning up on the day.

Can I bring a bicycle or e-scooter on Etihad Rail?

No. Bicycles, scooters, e-scooters and e-bikes are banned on passenger services, even if they fold. Pushchairs and reserved wheelchairs are allowed.

Why are Etihad Rail tickets more expensive than AED 39 now?

Etihad Rail uses variable pricing, so fares rise for afternoon, evening and weekend trains and as cheaper seats sell out. Dubai to Abu Dhabi currently runs AED 39-59 (USD 11-16) in Comfort. Booking early, avoiding afternoon and weekend departures and buying online rather than at the station machine all keep the price down.

Rules and fares checked October 2026. Etihad Rail can update its policies and prices at any time, so confirm on etihadrail.ae or in the app before you travel.
