Dubai has unveiled ambitious plans to significantly expand its metro network by 2040, aiming to increase the number of stations from the current 64 to 140. This expansion is set to cover an extensive area of 228 square kilometres, up from the current 84 square kilometres.
Immediate Targets
By 2030, Dubai aims to have 96 metro stations spread across 140 square kilometres, marking a substantial increase in accessibility and coverage for commuters.
Development Strategy
The initiative, announced by the Government of Dubai, forms part of the Executive Council’s broader strategy to enhance urban development around metro stations. This strategy seeks to reduce carbon emissions to 16 tonnes per capita and foster economic growth by creating more residential, commercial, office, and service spaces.
Impact and Integration
The new stations are expected to boost local populations and integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure. Currently, Dubai Metro operates two lines: the Green Line serving Bur Dubai and Deira, and the Red Line connecting the old city, airport, Downtown, Dubai Marina, and Expo 2020.
Upcoming Projects
Construction is already underway on the Blue Line, spanning 30 kilometres with sections both underground and aboveground. This line will feature 14 stations, including three interchange points, enhancing connectivity across the city.
Future Prospects
While specific details on the locations of all new stations have not been disclosed, future expansions are expected to include integration with the development of Al Maktoum International Airport, set to become the world’s largest capacity airport.
Prospective Lines
Previously discussed lines such as the Purple Line, connecting north to south with Al Maktoum International Airport, and potential routes like the Gold and Pink Lines from west to east, remain under consideration pending further official announcements.
Dubai’s metro expansion represents a significant step towards enhancing public transport infrastructure, accommodating growth, and promoting sustainable urban development across the emirate.
