In a landmark event, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, recently inaugurated the Dubai Reef, marking a significant milestone in marine conservation efforts globally. This initiative, the world’s largest marine conservation endeavor, underscores Dubai’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Diving Expedition with Ray Dalio
To commemorate the inauguration of the Dubai Reef, Sheikh Hamdan embarked on a diving expedition alongside renowned American investor Ray Dalio. The Crown Prince shared a captivating 96-second clip of the expedition on his official social media account, highlighting the importance of this monumental project in fostering marine biodiversity and preserving our planet’s ecological balance.
Dubai Reef: A Marvel of Innovation and Sustainability
Spanning over 600 square kilometers, the Dubai Reef encompasses an area equivalent to more than 85,000 football fields. Its innovative design, comprising over 400,000 cubic meters in total volume, positions it as a groundbreaking initiative in marine conservation. One of its most remarkable features is its estimated capacity to capture over seven million tons of carbon annually, serving as a natural carbon sink and contributing significantly to efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.

Reviving Marine Biodiversity and Coral Reef Restoration
Beyond its role as a carbon sink, the Dubai Reef plays a pivotal role in coral reef habitat restoration, coastal protection, and the revival of marine biodiversity along Dubai’s coastline. Coral reefs are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth, supporting an estimated 25% or more of all marine life. By creating a conducive environment for marine organisms to thrive, this initiative safeguards critical ecosystems and fosters sustainable economic development and ecological resilience.
Empowering Communities through Dubai Can
The Dubai Reef initiative is spearheaded by Dubai Can, a pioneering organization launched by Sheikh Hamdan on February 5, 2022. With a mission to empower communities and promote sustainable practices, Dubai Can aim to reduce the use of single-use plastic water bottles, thereby mitigating plastic pollution and safeguarding marine environments for future generations.
Aligning with Strategic Priorities for Environmental Conservation
Sheikh Hamdan’s vision for the Dubai Reef aligns seamlessly with the strategic priorities outlined by the Government of Dubai to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The UAE underscores its commitment to sustainable development and global environmental stewardship by prioritising environmental preservation, wildlife conservation, and biodiversity promotion.
