Only in Dubai would you hail a cab and find absolutely no one driving it. Recently, a commercial driverless taxi in Dubai was launched on March 30, 2026. This makes Dubai one of the first cities in the world to put fully autonomous, fare-charging robotaxis on public roads.
WeRide and Apollo Go are operating the fleet under an RTA partnership, covering Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim right now with major expansion planned through 2030. Booking a driverless taxi in Dubai takes about 30 seconds if you know where to look. Here is the complete guide — apps, zones, pricing, and what the ride actually feels like.
Book Your Driverless Taxi In Dubai With These Apps
WeRide — Book via Uber
WeRide’s robotaxis are integrated directly into the Uber app. Open it, enter your pickup and destination, and the ‘Autonomous’ option will show up alongside your usual ride choices. Select it, confirm your location, and you will be matched with a WeRide Robotaxi. The booking process is identical to a regular Uber ride — the only difference is who is driving (nobody).
Tawasul Transport handles the WeRide fleet’s day-to-day operations, so there is a local company managing things on the ground even if the car itself is running solo.

Apollo Go runs on its own separate app, with the Dubai Taxi Company supporting local operations. Download the app, set your pickup within the coverage zone, and select your ride. The RT6 vehicles used by Apollo Go were designed from scratch without a driver in mind. No steering wheel, no pedals. The interior is built entirely around passengers, which is a strange thing to see in person if you have only ever been in a car built for a human to drive.

What is the Route of the driverless taxi in Dubai?
On my way to the World Governments Summit 2026, I took a ride in a fully autonomous taxi, enabled by artificial intelligence, advanced sensing technologies, and autonomous decision-making systems. Commercial operations currently cover Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim, two coastal neighbourhoods near Dubai’s public beaches. There are 20 approved pickup and drop-off points across both areas. Both your pickup and your destination need to fall within that zone. However, you cannot book from Jumeirah to Downtown just yet.
The expansion roadmap is fairly clear. Future coverage includes Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Investment Park Second, Jabal Ali Industrial, Nad Al Sheba, Wadi Al Safa, Warsan, and Ras Al Khor. Longer term, the fleet is expected to grow to 1,000 autonomous taxis within three years and reach 4,000 vehicles by 2030.
How Much Does a Driverless Taxi Cost in Dubai?
Fares are around 30% higher than standard Dubai taxi rates, placing the service closer to limousine taxi pricing. Not exactly budget transport, but not unreachable either. During the December 2025 trial, Uber ran a promotion offering 50 free rides capped at AED 500 each. That offer has ended. Keep an eye on the Uber app for any new deals as the service scales up.
What the Ride Is Actually Like?

WeRide vehicles seat up to five passengers, with second and third-row seating and enough legroom to feel comfortable on short to mid-length trips. The driverless taxi in Dubai runs on an integrated system powered by artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, and real-time decision-making. There is no one to make small talk with. The car reads the road, responds to traffic, and gets you there.
A dedicated 2,000-square-metre Operations and Control Centre at Dubai Science Park monitors the entire fleet in real time. Nobody is with you in the vehicle, but the system behind it is actively supervised.
Safety Concerns With Driverless Taxi in Dubai
Trials ran from December 2025 with a safety driver on board. In February 2026, the RTA reviewed that data and issued WeRide a fully driverless permit. WeRide holds autonomous driving permits in eight markets and has tested or operated in over 40 cities across 12 countries.
Over 90% of road accidents are caused by human error. These cars do not check their phones, do not misjudge a gap because they are running late, and do not make the kinds of mistakes that cause most crashes. That is not a marketing line — it is why autonomous vehicles exist.
What’s Next in Driverless Taxi in Dubai?
The current fleet sits at 100 vehicles between both providers. WeRide and Uber have committed to deploying at least 1,200 Robotaxis across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Riyadh. Pony.ai is also joining the Dubai programme. Dubai’s long-term goal is for 25% of all public transport journeys to be driverless by 2030.
If you live in or near Jumeirah or Umm Suqeim, you can try it this week. Open Uber, look for the Autonomous option, and see what it is like to sit in the back of a car that knows exactly where it is going.
